Creating claims Updated July 28, 2026

Can I bill charges that are already on the account?

Yes, and it is usually the fastest honest way to build a claim, because the work is already done.

Charges recorded on a patient’s account sit there with a status of entered. They are real money owed, but no claim is carrying them to a payer yet.

To bill them:

  1. Open the patient and click the Account tab.
  2. Tick the charges you want to bill.
  3. Click Create claim from selected, at the top of the list.

The claim form opens already filled in. The patient, the services and the prices all carry straight over from the account.

A few things the charges cannot carry still need you: which group is billing, which doctor gave the care, the payer, and the diagnosis. Fill those in and click Create claim.

The result is a draft built from charges that were already waiting, and the account and the claim now tell one connected story. When the payer answers, the money lands back on those same charges.

Note that a cash charge will never appear as an option here. A self pay line stays on the account and can never join an insurance claim. See What is a charge?.
