How do I change who is responsible for a bill?

The guarantor is the person responsible for the balance. On the patient’s Account tab, they are named right at the top of the money section, and there is a Change button next to them.

You change it when life changes. A child’s visits move to a parent. A divorce moves them to the other parent. A spouse takes over the bill. A child turns eighteen and becomes responsible for themselves.

The steps are short:

1. Click Change.
2. Pick the new responsible party and name them.
3. Give a reason. This is required, because it is the answer to “why does this bill say a different name than it did last month.”
4. Save.

The change is written to the account timeline: who it changed from, who it changed to, and why. Nothing is overwritten, so months later the history still tells the truth.

One thing changing the guarantor does not do is move the insurance. Coverage and responsibility are separate. A parent can be the guarantor while the child is the covered patient, which is the ordinary case for a pediatric visit.
